ICONO-CLASSIC BORN IN LOS ANGELES, THE VINCE IS THE NEW STATUS SYMBOL FOR FASHION INSIDERS

Consider some of fashion’s classics – the Hermes Berkin; the Chanel jacket; Levi’s, worn in by age, not by machine – things that defy trends and time yet are instantly recognizable. Prepare to induct a new name into that storied list: the Vince.

Vince is best known as a line of luxe staples popular with celebrities such as Kate Hudson and Renee Zellweger, so it’s no surprise that the label’s signature cashmere sweater is becoming an icon. It comes in 32 colors. Its neckline forms a perfect O shape. It zips up the front and has a hood, slanted pockets, and a slightly rolled hem. It doesn’t have the waiting list of a Birkin – or the price tag (it’s $220). But the sweater is sending celebrities into a frenzy. (Catherine Zeta-Jones, upon discovering it as Saks, called Vince, desperate to have it in multiple colors).

In addition to the signature zip-up hoodie, Vince makes every basic-with-a-twist sweater imaginable. The collection, available at Saks, Barneys New York, and Fred Segal, also includes such time-honored essentials as parkas and striped trousers. Any designs deemed too trendy get the ax.

“We like to think our customer wears our cashmere sweaters while sitting in first class with her Hermes bag, “says Christopher LaPolice, the cofounder, with Rea Laccone, of the year-old company based in L.A. and New York. That’s actually a humble ambition given that Madonna wears a Vince bomber on the cover of her American Life album.

But in the end, this duo is dazzled more by reality than by fantasy. What really impressed them was seeing paparazzi of the Material Girl wearing said jacket to a Tower Records appearance. “There are things that end up in photo shoots that are meant to inspire,” says LaPolice. “But when Madonna actually wears the clothes on the street, it’s amazing.”
