The "fifth taste" (umami) has been concretized--and it's in a quaint spot with Asian-style paper lanterns in Hancock Park. From the original owner of Culver City's beloved BottleRock comes Umami Burger, a casual place where good food is served fast--and with extra satisfaction. If overeating is often psychological, well then umami seems to be the answer as its known for the satiating effect of its meaty, savory, flavory. The menu includes such "delicious flavors" (the direct translation of the Japanese word) as truffle-, pickle- and Stilton cheese-covered beef; a triple pork burger with Manchego and pimenton aioli; and a Middle Eastern burger with lamb and yogurt sauce. Look out for dee-jayed weekend evenings in the near future, and don't forget to to B.Y.O.B.
Umami Burger has been one of the most buzzed-about restaurants in LA since it opened, and has definitely raised the bar for hamburgers in LA. In N Out who? The ingredients are all fresh and bursting with flavor, thanks in large part to the elusive umami ingredient. The fries are delicious and the onion rings are crisp and golden. I'd suggest the Truffle Burger - really magical.
I'd suggest a weekday during late-afternoon, this is the time when Umami Burger is the least crowded. Also, a fun spot for a pre-going out meal, hit up Umami Burger on a Saturday night for a lively crowd and delicious eats.
