The first museum on the West Coast devoted to Modern Art.
WHO: Art enthusiasts hoping to catch a glimpse of Matisse's "Femme au Chapeau".
SFMOMA is a modern piece of art in itself, one reason why art aficionados flock to this West Coast outpost, housing the largest collection of Modern Art this side of the Mississippi.
Swiss architect, Mario Botta's striking modernist building caused quite the scene when it opened in 1995, and its looking even better these days, surrounded by new high-rises and with the matured Yerba Buena Gardens at its footsteps. SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to Modern Art and it’s still the 2nd largest Modern Art museum building in the country.
In addition to showcasing its far-ranging permanent collection which includes important Abstract Expressionists, Bay Area and Southern California artists, photographers, and media artists, the museum frequently hosts traveling blockbusters, and hosts the latest in digital and high-tech installations.
Check out the Matisse's priceless, "Femme au Chapeau" and of course, Jeff Koons’ ceramic “Michael Jackson with Bubbles” – an eighties favorite. Next, make a B-line to the museums' heavyweights with a docent-guided tour (complimentary) to Duchamp, Warhol, O’Keefe, Rivera, Kahlo, Magritte, Rothko, and Rauschenberg.
Admission is free on the first Tuesday of every month and on Thursday nights admission is free after 6pm.
