The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is one of the America’s largest modern art museums.
Who: Ron Mueck (pictured), Chuck Close, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Jasper Johns, Sherrie Levine, Magritte, Andre Serrano, Alexander Calder, Claes Oldenberg, Christo, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha and a plethora of modern and port-modern works.
One of the largest and most extensive Modern Art collections in the U.S., the MCA is a pleasure to visit from the ultra art-forward temporary exhibits to the comprehensive permanent collection to the beautiful museum gardens and the Wolfgang Puck café, the MCA is the perfect outing for artphiles and newbies alike. Like plucking jewels from the crown of Modern American Art, the permanent collection boasts a well-chosen archetype of each artist from the token Calder to the fabric-fried-egg Claes Oldenberg it’s an succinct crash course in Modern Art.
The architecture is a treat as well, as much as a vertical experience as horizontal, the giant spiral staircase is a beautiful piece of architecture. Start at the top to view the permanent collection and work your way down. The trendy Puck café headed by celeb chef Wolfgang Puck serves up decadent treats with a view of the gardens.
Most museum regulars will skip the obligatory museum store trip but the Culturecounter store is pretty cool. There you can get hard-to-find art books, DVD’s, toys and curiosities with a smart design sense and touch of humor.
Local Tip: Admission is Free EVERY Tuesday.
Museum Hours Monday Closed Tuesday 10 am - 8 pm Wednesday through Sunday 10 am - 5 pm Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day: Closed Admission is FREE all day on Tuesdays
