Gonpachi is a massive establishment which seats 259 (according to the web site). One immediately wonders if it ever reaches capacity. The immense and cavernous multi-storied space envelops you as you walk in. It has a very clichédly (and yes, I have recently decided that 'clichédly' is a sound enough adaptation of the borrowed word) Japanese aesthetic: ironically but to this reviewer, expectedly more so than the Shibuya space in Tokyo. In a word, pleasing. The roof adorning the entrance, the atmospheric greenery, the simple, serene, woody feel, and the minimalist porcelain serving ware – and - importantly, the delightful surprise that some of the food actually lives up to the impressive edifice.
Gonpachi serves sushi and sashimi of all varieties, the regular array of soups and salads, robata (Japanese grill), and noodles. The soba noodles are “hand-pounded” and represent the restaurant’s traditional offerings. I would definitely recommend ordering either hot or cold soba, as the hot soba noodles are bathed in a mouth-watering broth and are absolutely delicious. Great relaxed and zen-like tranquil vibe here, the atmosphere makes you feel as if you've left LA and have been transported to Japan.
It's best to come for a full house, so I would suggest either Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night. Make sure to fully take in the koi pond/bridge entrance when you arrive, it's quite delightful. Gonpachi Beverly Hills is good for special occasions and intimate dinners with its lovely decor, mellow vibe, service just-so, and good food.
