What is Beatrice?

A quasi-private nightclub that hipsters can't seem to get enough of.

Why go to Beatrice?

The Beatrice Inn is the downtown set's answer to the revival of the Waverly Inn. The former speakeasy and Italian restaurant is breeding ground for the art and fashion elite. Unflinching doormen guard the stairwell leading to three parlors with all the accoutrements of a proper speakeasy: low-slung vintage furniture, vinyl records on rotation and night creatures sipping rarefied cocktails. Oil paintings and a sign urging patrons to speak low complete the hush-hush scene.

The owners aim to make the Beatrice Inn a classically American spot with Monday Scrabble sessions and old standby Italian-food specials that cater to the pre-Beatrice regulars. Saturday nights are so-called jacket-and-tie affairs. And the D.J. (sometimes, co-owner Paul Sevigny himself) spins everything from metal to Motown.

Allegedly, Beatrice Inn serves food but no one has actually witnessed the vodka-cigarette runway crowd snacking on Reubens. The alleged menu of late-night bites includes NYC throwbacks like steak, Reubens, and Kaiser roll burger.

Cocktails ($12): Old favorites like the Negroni, Moscow Mule, and even an egg cream made with chocolate syrup, seltzer, and vanilla vodka. If you're hoping to enter the Beatrice Inn you're going to need to make sure you're on the guest list first—and under seven feet tall.
