Founded in 2008 by Kallie Dovel, 31 Bits is a collection of jewelry designed by women in Gulu, Uganda. In the summer of 2007, Kallie traveled to Uganda and met women who were making paper beads but who lacked a plan to market and sell them. After spending some time with these women, she brought a box of their jewelry back to the United States where she finished her degree, all the while dreaming up the concept of a development organization. After finding a few friends to help her out, her dreams came true and 31 Bits was born. The name comes from Proverbs 31 in the Bible where it describes a woman caring for herself and her family, and “bits” describes the bits of recycled paper the jewelry is made from. Beginning with just 6 Ugandan women and quickly growing to 100, Kallie and her friends buy jewelry from these women on a monthly basis. 31 Bits offers fashion and design to empower Ugandan women to rise above poverty and create a new and better lifestyle for themselves. Each bead is handmade from strips of 100 percent recycled paper, rolled into different designs, then is hand-dipped in a non-toxic, water-based varnish to retain its shape.
