Syla by Sylvie Cachay Biography
Syla by Sylvie Cachay's Biography
Sylvie Cachay, designer of the new luxury swimwear collection Syla, always knew she wanted to be a fashion designer. As a small child, she loved to spend time in her mother’s art studio, gaining an early appreciation for design by watching her mother work. Sylvie grew up with dual citizenship, splitting her time between Virginia and Peru, and was inspired by the different cultures and environments. She always loved the beach, and soon began to collect beautiful bikinis. Over the years, her collection of swimwear has grown and her childhood love of the beach lifestyle has matured into a career.
After graduating from a prominent college prep school, Sylvie was accepted to Parsons Paris and moved overseas to study fashion and art. Following this program, Sylvie moved back to the U.S. to attend Marymount University in Virginia. While at Marymount, Sylvie excelled in fashion and design and won a prestigious award from the Fashion Group International as well as an award for the Best Senior Collection. After graduating with a BFA in Design, Sylvie moved to New York and now calls Manhattan’s East Village home.
Sylvie got her start in fashion with a design intern position at Marc Jacobs. From there, Sylvie’s fashion career exploded at Tommy Hilfiger where she quickly moved through the ranks from Assistant Designer for Juniors Sportswear to Head Designer for Women’s Sportswear. In 2002, Victoria’s Secret caught wind of Sylvie’s accomplishments in the fashion industry and pursued her to head up their swimwear team. While at Victoria’s Secret, Sylvie recognized a need in the oversaturated, standardized swimwear market for high-end, sophisticated swimwear with simple lines and distinctive patterns. She left Victoria’s Secret in January 2006 to reach this untapped market and create her own collection, and the Syla brand was born.
Syla (“sea-la”) is a luxury swimwear collection for sophisticated women, launching for Spring/Summer 2007. The word originates from two sources – a combination of the designer’s name and the name of her good friend, Layla. The name also pays tribute to Sylvie’s mom, Sylvia, as well as the influence of the sea. Fusing the Art-Deco era with an 18th century Chinoiserie influence, the Cruise 06/07 collection modernizes ancient elements with the use of bold, vibrant patterns, taking swimwear to a new level.
Sylvie combines these strong, vintage patterns from past centuries, calling the look “earthy-glamour, hippy-couture.” She uses feminine and masculine elements and mixes modern silhouettes with antique, geometric prints. The collection is print-driven, emphasizing bold patterns and romantic colors, and includes a range of silhouettes such as the ruched bandeau halter, the skirted hipster and the vintage-inspired high waist bottom. “Syla swimwear is for a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and doesn’t feel she needs to follow the latest trends,” says Sylvie. “I wanted to create a collection that was unique with sophisticated colors, striking prints and an incredible fit.”
The collection includes 10 fashion-forward silhouettes, offering a range of coverage options, and allowing women to select the ideal suit for their body type. Sylvie’s designs are manufactured at a top overseas factory to ensure quality craftsmanship and a flawless fit. In addition to swimwear, Syla by Sylvie Cachay also plans to offer matching resortwear and other beach accessories.
Sylvie debuted the Syla collection in July 2006 at the SwimShow in Miami, Florida to rave reviews. The suits retail from $250- $300 for swimwear and between $95 and $350 for beach accessories. In addition to these lines, Syla by Sylvie Cachay also plans to introduce resortwear and other beach accessories. The Spring/Summer ‘07 collection will be available at finer departments stores and specialty boutiques worldwide in February 2007.
