Single Dress's Biography
Fashion and style run deep in designer Galina Sobolev’s blood. As a child in her native Russia, Galina learned to sew and crochet from her grandmother, a well-respected dressmaker with her own atelier. Noted as one of the most profound influences of her life, Galina cites playing with the colorful fabrics and supple garments created by her grandmother as being instrumental in establishing her dream of designing.
After graduating with honors from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan and walking the runway for major fashion houses in NY, Galina began her design career in the luxury market, working for an exclusive knitwear manufacturer for Marc Jacobs, among others. In 1987 she switched gears and relocated to Los Angeles to design for several successful lines in the contemporary market. However, it was her fairytale meeting with future husband Michael Sobolev that truly changed her life. Michael’s savvy business sense and entrepreneurial drive combined with Galina's design talent, created a perfect formula for starting their own venture. It wasn’t long before Saks Fifth Avenue and Fred Segal picked up Galina’s beautiful signature printed silk chiffon dresses. In 1996, based on the overwhelmingly positive reaction, Galina and Michael streamlined their collection into a label they named Single.
