Mercedes Benz Hosts Fashion Week 2005 At Smashbox Studios In Los Angeles
By Louise Ashby
It’s Fashion week, LA is manic, models are barfing and the music is loud. The event kicks off with the “Rock the Runway” show, which was hosted by Super Model Cindy Crawford. Not only are wardrobes in chaos finding the right look, while living in the sweat-pant capital of the world, but this is the one chance to take advantage of what you have and not only drink cosmopolitans but feel cosmopolitan. Unlike London, Sydney and New York which are known for being chic and fabulous and fill their pages of vogue with a unique selection of fabulous clothes, LA is one of the towns where fashion has a more laid back approach. Unless you have an audition or a meeting then its comfort casual that seems to fit.
Smashbox studios are decked out like a large tent and the main room is completely dark. The only thing that is white is the runway. Seats are lined along the room and once the doors open, guests run to find a good spot. Celebrities seem to be rated by which row at the show they are sitting in and it seems that if you have a seat further than row three then no goody bag for you...
The main event every year is the Rock and Republic show, which, this year, was held at Sony Studios. It was a huge success. The red carpet was swamped with soap stars, rock stars, film stars, television stars, those who think they are stars, and of course a fashion event wouldn’t be complete without a late entrance from the Hilton Sisters.
Rock & Republic means edgy, progressive denim inspired by Rock & Roll and with an emphasis on modern silhouettes and a sleek fit! Each piece in the collection is designed for sexy, confident men and women who live the lifestyle and really understand the look.
A sound stage was decked in Rock & Roll fitting clothe, lasers beams, bars and large heavy goody bags, for only of course, the first three rows. Camp Freddy were playing and Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols treated the wide mouthed guests with a cameo appearance on his guitar, so relaxed that he thought he would do it leaning on the side of the stage. The models were risqué and it was the creations that made them so. The mini skirts were so mini that bottom cheeks did all but blush. Anna Nicole Smith’s personal interior designer, Bobbi Trendy sat front row looking anything but trendy, but very pink and orange and whatever other colors could be find in a feather or hat.
