Los Angeles-based designer Pegah Anvarian grew up in Dalla, Texas to a photographer father and educator mother, who taught her how to sew at age six. Together with her grandmother, Ms. Anvarian’s family encouraged creativity in the home, prompting Pegah to design her own clothes from age eight.Inspired by her love of sewing, fabrics, and color, Pegah recognized that working with clothes was her calling, and quickly moved to New York in 1996 to realize her dream.
Upon arriving in New York City, she began assisting as a costume designer and stylist. It was through this that she met and began working with renowned rock band The B-52’s, and was coaxed to go on tour with them and The Pretenders for an international tour lasting the year. Upon her return to New York City, Pegah continued styling, working with a variety of well known directors on cutting edge music videos and commercials. It was also during this time that Ms. Anvarian knew that it was time for a change.
Pegah relocated to Los Angeles in 1999, and continued styling, doing extensive editorial, celebrity, and advertising work. As much as she was enjoying working with clothes, Ms. Anvarian was growing tired of the daily grind of styling.
She was shopping for a music video job, and came across a tubular roll of white cashmere jersey. Upon inquiring about the price, she bought the entire role, and began working with the fabric, night and day, draping it on herself, and began hand-sewing and hand-dying tops individually, the first one in a bright pink, and the beginnings of the Pegah Anvarian Collection were born.
The Collection officially began with Fall 2002, with her first sets of orders coming from such esteemed retailers as Henri Bendel in New York City and Madison in Los Angeles.
Ms. Anvarian finds her inspiration in all facets of life. Everything from her signature fabric, which gets knitted for her exclusively by an Italian mill, to the colors used in Moroccan architecture, lighting, the ocean, hip hop music, Brazilian film, the dry heat of Southern California – all are things that provide her the muse to design her namesake collection.
Her pieces are also undeniably sexy, although not overtly so. Notes Anvarian; “Sexiness is all inside, fabrics and colors - they exude sexiness all their own. Ideally, my clothes would allow women to find their own sexiness, in their own way. They are fun and sexy, but also sophisticated – the way that each piece is draped, the way the clothes hang on the body.”
The Pegah Anvarian Collection is currently distributed internationally, and is available at Henri Bendel in New York City; Madison in Los Angeles; Gregory’s in Dallas, Texas; and Talulah G’s in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Collection is produced in Los Angeles twice yearly.
Ms. Anvarian currently resides in Hollywood, California, with her fiancé, photographer Andrew MacPherson.
