Biography of Thao Nguyen
It has already been a long day when Thao Nguyen settles into a wire chair outside a coffee shop in Williamsburg, Virginia, counting weeks to the end of what may prove her last day job pouring coffee (at least it doesn’t involve wearing a period costume), and more than ready to be finished with an undergraduate career at which she has excelled.
She is still and careful and does not fidget, and yet Thao fairly vibrates — it’s the only word, no matter how inappropriately loaded — with want. Not the carnal kind, nor the grasping for celebrity which too often passes for art, nor the naked aggression for which Los Angeles is justly famous.
No, she simply wants to be heard. She wants permission to believe what her instincts insist: That her music is good enough, that it will get better still, that there is an audience for what she has to say. That she can make a living. She simply needs to know that her good fortune has not been an illusion.
There’s no telling, of course, and no certainty.
But she is every bit as good as she has been lucky, and she has made her own luck.
She comes from Fall’s Church, Virginia, one of the less-affluent suburbs outside Washington, D.C., grew up on the nice side of the shopping mall where people are stabbed with uncomfortable frequency. But that’s not really her story.
Her father left when she was 12, and that’s got a fair bit to do with the degree she received in Sociology and Women’s Studies from William & Mary. But that’s not quite her story, either.
There was a guitar in the attic. That’s her story. “I loved Sarah McLachlan when I was ten and eleven,” she laughs. “I went to Lilith Fair and then I went and bought the videos of Lilith Fair and her individual tour. I think she’s what made me interested in songwriting. And there was a guitar in my room that I never knew how to play; I decided to learn.”

Thao with the Get Down
I really like everything about this band, the vocals Thao Nguyen has an amzing voice and her acoustic sound is great...the band really flows together well! I would definitely go see this band play live!

I don't know if anyone has the cd or heard them but I got the cd and Thao has my fav song on this compilation. They have this upbeat, folk sound that is really fun to listen to. You want to dance and tap your feet at the same time. It's "sweet".
