Founded in 1972 by Stephen Marks, French Connection creates well-designed fashionable clothing that appeals to a broad range of customers. Born in 1947 in Britain, Stephen Marks’ first love was tennis and he won at Junior Wimbledon, proving his dedication and strong work ethic. After mastering tennis, Marks began working for a the Paris house of Louis Feraud, where he proved himself as a good salesman with an eye for fabric details and an understanding of the importance of a good silhouette. He was offered a directorship but declined with ambitions to start his own label. He began buying hotpants in Paris and selling to Selfridges London and was soon known as the “Hotpants King.” In 1969, Marks was able to begin his own line of womenswear which he later named French Connection. With great success in the brand, menswear and childrenswear were quickly added on and over recent years perfumes, sunglasses, watches and shoes.
In 1997, French Connection was beginning to go through a financial slump and Marks set out to find an unforgettable ad campaign to boost their sales and he found it. Marks turned French Connection UK into one of the most controversial campaigns in fashion by using the company initials FCUK. While the new logo sent the company through various legal challenges, with many department stores banning the brand completely, the campaign worked and sales rose. In August 2004, French Connection decided to discontinue the logo, but we will never forget the brand and the iconic campaign that made French Connection one of the leading brands in fashion. With flattering silhouettes, beautiful prints, and an attention to detail, French Connection is the perfect way to update any woman’s wardrobe.
