Christina Aguilera isn’t the only actress with a December 18th birthday: Katie Holmes also celebrated turning another year older on the same day. Can you believe little Joey Potter just celebrated the big 3-0? It seems like just yesterday I was watching the drama unfold on “Dawson’s Creek” – how fast time flies! Katie’s big b-day happened to fall on a performance night of "All My Sons," and as hardworking as she is, Kat didn’t even ask for the night off! Not one to disappoint, Tom had a few tricks up his sleeve, and had Katie’s co-star, John Lithgow, announce to the audience after the show was over: "Tom Cruise, our good friend, devoted fan to the show, doting husband of Katie, could not be here tonight. He's heartsick that he couldn't be here ... but he wanted to make his presence felt. So, he's joining us, inviting all of you, to celebrate Katie's birthday." Imagine Katie’s surprise when a 5 tiered birthday cake was wheeled out onto the stage for all to share, with Suri accompanying it to help mom blow out the candles! Since the big day, Katie’s been spotted bundled up in the Big Apple a few times, bonding with Suri and enjoying a few days off stage. On Dec 28 Katie emerged from her apartment with a bold new look unveiled by the slightly warmer temps, heading back to work for the first of two Sunday performances. Pairing slouchy cuffed denim shorts by See Thru Soul with black stirrup tights (try starting with William Rast’s Lisa Long Short Dark Handsand without Holes in Blue and cuff them yourself), classy black pumps and a slim black cardigan (like Smitten’s High Neck Double Breasted Sweater Jacket in Black), Katie kept it simple with a warm gray scarf (try Elizabeth Gillett’s decadent Parker Ruffle Scarf in Grey), oversized sunnies and her glittered wedding band as her only accessories. How do you feel about the shorts-over-tights trend? It seems to be one created exclusively by Katie, perhaps bringing a little funky LA style to the east coast? Bottom line, what do you think: does it work?
