Sanaa Lathan

Sanaa McCoy Lathan (born September 19, 1971) is a Tony Award-nominated and NAACP Image Award-winning American actress. She has starred in box office hits such as: Love & Basketball, Alien vs. Predator, Something New, and The Family That Preys. Lathan was born in New York City and attended Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. Her first name means "work of art" in Swahili. In 1998, Lathan earned a degree of recognition with her role as the mother of Wesley Snipes' title character in Blade. She followed this the subsequent year with a role in Life with Martin Lawerence and Eddie Murphy and back-to-back turns in The Best Man and The Wood. The Best Man was a comedic ensemble film, starring Taye Diggs, Nia Long and Morris Chestnut. The Wood, another ensemble film starring Diggs and Omar Epps, cast her as the love interest of Epps, who at the time was also her real-life boyfriend. Lathan and Epps were reunited onscreen in Prince-Bythewood's Love & Basketball, this time playing a couple as passionate about basketball as they are about each other. The film served as a break-out role for Lathan, who played a leading character instead of the girlfriend of one. Her work in Love & Basketball earned her the 2001 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actress. That same year, Lathan earned additional acclaim for her work in the multicultural comedy Catfish in Black Bean Sauce and for her second collaboration with Prince-Bythewood, Disappearing Acts. Based on a novel by Terry McMillan, the HBO movie cast Lathan as an aspiring singer/songwriter in love with a carpenter, played by her Blade co-star Wesley Snipes. For her work in the film, Lathan earned an Essence Award for Best Actress, as well as the added assurance of a very busy work schedule. That year, she was named by Ebony magazine as one of its 55 Most Beautiful People and was honoured by Essence magazine and BET.

SANAA'S SPIN-OFF

Sanaa Lathan seen on Apr 03 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. Talented actress Sanaa Lathan was spotted working the red carpet of the I "Heart" Ronson Launch Party in Los Angeles on April 3, looking pretty and playful as she did the always popular hand-on-hip pose. In a flattering floral dress with a funky zippered accent (check out Walter's Tulip Print Cross Back Dress in Pink Multi or Karina Grimaldi's Juana Silk Mini Dress in Cosmic Plum for similar flirty options), Sanaa accessorized with a classic black Chanel bag, brown gladiator wedges (similar to Matiko Footwear's Ashley 2 Wedge in Brown), and a cute square ring (I'm into Rachel Leigh's Enamel Ring in Pink, which also comes in two other great shades, Blue and Lime). Overall, I love this look on her - it's classy and girly all at the same time! As Sanaa enjoyed her evening while chatting with friend Kim Kardashian, other guests of the shindig included Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton. However, one notable guest that was absolutely, positively NOT allowed inside was Lindsay Lohan. Apparently, Charlotte's sister Sam made sure every bodyguard was aware not to let Linds in - as rumors swirled that Linds and Samantha have really, finally broken things off for good (LiLo took to her Twitter to call Sam out for cheating and doing drugs). Of course, Linds still tried to crash, and it took 5 bodyguards to prevent her from coming in. A source says, "Unless Lindsay rams a truck through the red carpet or skydives in, she won't be here. Lindsay knew she was unwanted, but came anyway, to no avail." I would have loved to see a video of that denial! In other Lathan news, it seems that Sanaa is joining Kanye West and recent Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson on the new television show "The Cleveland Show," a spin-off of "Family Guy." "The show, which is slated to premiere in the fall on Fox, will follow the character of Cleveland Brown and his family as they move from Rhode Island to Virginia." Lathan will provide the voice of Cleveland's new wife, Donna. What do you think - any "Family Guy" fans out there who will be tuning in?
