Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman (born June 9, 1981) is a Golden Globe-winning, Academy Award-nominated Israeli-American actress. Portman began her career in the early 1990s, turning down the opportunity to become a child model in favor of acting. Her first role came in the 1994 independent film Leon: The Professional, however her breakout role did not come until she was cast as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. In 2005, Portman received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her critically acclaimed performance in the art house drama Closer. She divides her roles between mainstream films such as V for Vendetta and art house films such as Garden State.

AU REVOIR, DEVENDRA!

Natalie Portman seen on Oct 02 2008 in Paris, France. Looking très magnifique, Natalie Portman is getting over her recent break-up the only way a girl can: indulging in a little retail therapy, of course! Natalie was spotted in Paris on October 2 attending Giambattisa Valli’s runway show, looking every bit the polished, glamorous actress she is. Perhaps Paris’ elegant mademoiselles told her to toss those hideous sweats? For the show, Nat wore a classic LBD with tasteful tulip shoulders (check out Suzabelle’s Galliano Swing Dress in Black or Ella Moss’ James Flare Sleeve Dress in Black), breaking out her fav pom-pom heels and carrying a black satin bag (try Moe Bags’ Andie Rouched Silk CLICK Bag in Black), completing her look with classic red polish on her digits. Nothing like a trip to Paris – during fashion week, nonetheless – to mend a broken heart! Natalie met her ex-beau on the set of his music video, “Carmensita,” in which she starred, but it looks like her role isn’t quite finished yet. Nat has been asked to apologize for her portrayal of Princess Carmensita after offending a variety of Hindu scholars, who spoke out collectively against the video, “The images used in the video are revered in Hinduism and are not to be thrown around loosely for dramatic effects. We invite Hollywood to immerse itself in Hinduism, but we ask that actors and actresses, directors and producers take our religion seriously and respectfully.” I doubt that Natalie actually had any say in the way her character was portrayed, but the spokesman continued, “Forgiveness is one of the main virtues of Hindu ethics. If Natalie Portman offers a sincere public apology, Hindus would not only absolve her but might also pray for her success in future ventures.” Looks like Nat needs to make some phone calls!

AS CASUAL AS THEY COME

Natalie Portman seen on Sep 25 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. It may be acceptable to dress comfortably for trans-continental flights, but Natalie Portman took it to a whole new level when she arrived at LAX on Sept 25 with her pooch and luggage in tow. From the outside, her black overcoat (similar to Suzabelle’s Biella Wool Trench Coat in Black) and dark silver rimmed sunnies look sleek and polished, but the tucked in purple tee and baggy sweats underneath – yikes! (To pull off the casual look and retain an ounce of style, try Hank Vintage Threads’ Fleur de Lis French Terry Pant in Mocha with Woo’s Long Sleeve Henley in Light Plum - no tucking in allowed!). I wouldn’t even wear this get-up to the gym, but I guess we all have to give NP a break. People announced this week that Nat and her wacky beau, Devendra Banhart, have called it quits, with friends saying things heated up too quickly and fizzled just as fast. My guess? Nat is headed home to her native NY to recuperate from the split. She won’t have much time to relax though, as the next item on her agenda is directing her first full length film, an adaptation of Israeli Amos Oz’s gripping memoir A Tale of Love and Darkness, which will be narrated in its original language, Hebrew, rather than using the English translation. NP explains her inspiration to Variety, “Someone made a good point once about how would you feel if Mexicans came and made a movie about George Washington in Spanish? It would be absurd but we do it all the time. I think people are much more open to reading subtitles now and prefer the authenticity of seeing the true language of that culture. It's becoming unacceptable to make films in places and in a language they're not supposed to be in.” Seems like more Harvard alums should be directing films, no? Not to mention, directing the film entirely in Hebrew will give Israeli-born Nat a chance to get in touch with her roots… just in time for Rosh Hashanah!

TENNIS TIME

Natalie Portman seen on Sep 08 2008 in New York. NY. After her big week in Venice, Natalie Portman made her way home to New York on Sept 8, but surprisingly not for fashion week. Sticking to her tomboy roots, Nat headed straight for the US Open, where she sat directly in front of Charlize Theron while enjoying a few brews and watching Roger Federer defeat Andy Murray. For her tennis outing, Nat wore a comfy, casual striped t-shirt dress (like Gina Michele’s Organic Citrus Stripe Dress in Sunshine Yellow) with simple strappy sandals (try Matiko’s Ivana Sandals in Gold) and carried an earthy brown tote (similar to Carla Mancini’s Braided Handle Bag in Metallic Crocodile). Nat kept her accessories minimal, with chic diamond stud earrings (try the natural shape of Vevina Juji’s Sweet Earrings in Silver instead, I’m sure Nat would approve!) and classy red polish on her digits. In response to her well received directorial debut at the Venice International Film Festival, Nat told the press, “I was always interested in trying to write and direct. We have so much time off between filming as actors that we tend to get restless and we want a creative outlet. There is not always acting work that fulfills that need.” Though her debut film was under 30 mins, I can’t wait to see how a full feature film would turn out with Nat behind the camera!

QUITE THE HUMANITARIAN

Natalie Portman seen on Sep 01 2008 in Venice, Italy. One of the most intelligent actresses in the business (she did graduate from Harvard, afterall), natural beauty Natalie Portman made waves at the 65th Annual Venice International Film Festival taking place this weekend. Arriving by boat, Natalie attended the screening of her first short film, Eve, on September 1 in a non-competition slot of the festival. Nat’s debut flick stars former model Lauren Bacall and Ben Gazzara in a short story about a woman and her grandmother. I can’t wait to see what the critics think of Nat’s directing ability! Although she later glammed up the red carpet in a gorgeous fringed frock, Natalie arrived at the screening for her film looking every bit the natural, indie girl she is, fresh faced with her brown wavy locks flowing. Wearing a simple graphic tee (try Hank Vintage Threads’ Girly Silhouette V Neck Thermal in White) with tight rolled cuff jeans (similar to Desert Blue’s Water Element Jean in Tornado Dark Indigo, easy to cuff yourself) and funky, moccasin-meets-Vans earthy shoes, Nat carried a black envelope clutch (like Julie K’s Jessica Fold Over Clutch in Night Exotic) and shielded her peepers from the bright Venice sun with black Wayfarers (for a fun alternative on the classics, check out JeeVice’s Sassy in Black/G15). Last night, Natalie was honored to be the first recipient of the “Movie for Humanity Award,” a new genre created to honor dedicated humanitarians in the movie industry. Natalie accepted the award and a $50,000 check that will be donated to the charity of her choice – the Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania, a non-profit with wide-ranging education and conservation programs. Natalie has worked with the organization to develop the TACARE Girls’ Scholarship Program, which allows women access to secondary and higher education, enabling recipients to pursue job opportunities not traditionally sought after by women in their impoverished homeland. Congrats, Nat!

PREPPY IN PLAID

Natalie Portman seen on Aug 10 2008 in Malibu, CA. Our fave indie girl, Natalie Portman spent her Sunday out shopping with a friend in Malibu on August 10. NatNat browsed the racks in a preppy plaid jumper (like Plenty by Tracy Reese’s Half Circle Slip in Cayenne Plaid) paired with simple flipflops (try Matiko’s Juju Sandal in Black to pair with the above frock), a natural toned tote (check out Rough Roses’ Whitney Tote in Grey), and edgy metal rimmed sunnies (JeeVice’s Sexy in Brown Fade have a similar funky shape). Though she’s shielding her face, NP can’t shield her happiness that her first short film, Eve will debut at the Venice Film Festival on Sept 1. NatNat has also had her eye on the upcoming remake of the 1977 horror flick Suspiria, in which she would star as a ballet dancer who ends up attending the dance school from hell. Rumor has it the Garden State star is also interested in producing the remake of the cult classic, set to be directed by Pineapple Express mastermind David Gordon Green. I guess whether or not she produces will depend on how well her flick does in Venice. What do you think, can you picture Natalie as a bloody ballerina?

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Natalie Portman seen on Jul 15 2008 in New York, NY. Natalie Portman was out for a sweaty stroll in the NYC heat on July 15, looking as casual as the girl next door. To nab Nat’s comfy, everyday look, start with cropped denim shorts (very similar to Pierce Jean’s Costa Rica Frayed Bermuda in Light), a simple tee with a catchy graphic (check out Hussy Jr’s Love Your Hate Tee in Ivory) and add some earthy jewelry (Castaway’s Mauritius Necklace is ocean inspired like Nat’s Hawaiian shells). For the finishing touch: strappy black sandals (like Matiko’s 4 Ivy Sandal in Black), sleek shades with metal frame accents (try JeeVice’s Edgy in Black/Ash Brown) and an eco-friendly canvas tote. The 26-year-old actress appears to have taken a break from the silver screen and is now dabbling in other industries, beginning with fashion. The trendy vegetarian created her own line of vegan shoes for Te Casan back in February, which are leather-free and contribute 5% of proceeds to charity. The Harvard alum described her inspiration in typical smart-girl fashion, “Basically, I did it out of a lack of choice. I wanted a Mary Jane shoe without leather. I’ve been getting stuff from Target, which is de facto vegan because it’s so cheap. But I did need some shoes that weren’t made of canvas or plastic.” Continuing the eco-friendly theme, Nat will appear this season as a guest judge on a Project Runway challenge that involves sustainable materials. Natalie’s next move: appearing in her wacky boyfriend Devendra Banhart’s Bollywood inspired music video, “Carmensita.” You MUST google this video immediately – it’s too funny to pass up. In the video (which was filmed a few months ago, right after the couple met), Natalie plays Princess Carmensita, who must be rescued by her prince and his “rebellious beard.” The opening shots are weirdly reminiscent of Natalie’s portrayal of Queen Amadala in Star Wars, but the cheesy acting and subtitles are hilarious. Though no one can quite figure out the attraction between the beauty and her very hairy beast, Natalie and Devendra have been snapped smooching all over NYC, Malibu and Cannes since they got together. A close friend said, "He's funny, scary-smart and in love with her. This is a serious one, and they seem to be in it for the long haul. I've never seen her so in love or connected to somebody. I definitely wouldn't be shocked if he popped the question soon." Hmmm, do you think their love will last?

NATALIE THE HUMANITARIAN

Natalie Portman seen on Jun 05 2008 in New York, NY. Natalie Portman was seen strolling through NYC on June 5, arm in arm with her boyfriend, folk rock singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart. To get Natalie's look, start with a top in a shade of green that any leprechaun would be proud of, like Zoa's Pleated Ruffle Sleeve Top in Peppermint, or Lotta Stensson's beautifully decorated Pocket Tunic in Forest. Next up, slip your gams into a pair of black cropped denim (like James Jeans' Alex Skinny Crop Zip Jeans) and put on a pair of black ballet flats. Finally, grab a roomy brown leather tote (similar to Dutchy's Mesa Bag in Brandy) and slip on a pair of gradient shades, and you're set. Harvard degree sold separately! Not content with being named Maxim Magazine's "Sexiest Vegetarian," Natalie has a new humanitarian project to keep her busy. She is currently filming a clip to support a youth village which is being planned in Rwanda. This village will be a safe place for approximately 500 children-turned-refugees from the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Portman plans on screening the film on "Oprah" to publicize the effort. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I love when celebrities use their fame for good instead of DUI's!

Natalie Portman seen on Feb 18 2008 in London. Natalie Portman was spotted leaving Benares Restaurant in Berkeley Square in London on February 18, getting her spicy and exotic food fix, as Benares is a well known restaurant in London for its Indian cuisine. Natalie is totally mixing and matching high-end couture with casual kicks in this look, pairing a lust-worthy quilted Chanel with a pair of beat-up looking Converse. Classic! Portman also wrapped herself up in a grey scarf, and finished off her look with a pair of rich blue denim (like Joe's Jeans' Cigarette Super Slim Jean in Kennedy), a striped top (check out Signorelli's Butterfly Tee in Pearl) and kept warm with a cozy black coat (similar to Johnson's Jimmy Jacket with Tie Belt in Black). While Natalie is currently on a whirlwind tour promoting her new film, The Other Boleyn Girl, she has made it perfectly clear that there was one condition for her to do the picture: Scarlett Johansson. Nat said recently, "I read the script and loved it and came on as Anne, and I was like, 'I will only do it if Scarlett does it,' because I have just loved her for so long, since we were kids. She's so true always and so good, and you just never get the chance to work with someone your own age that you so admire. This was such a great, great chance (to do that)." Talk about the mutual admiration society!
