Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman (born June 9, 1981) is a Golden Globe-winning, Academy Award-nominated Israeli-American actress. Portman began her career in the early 1990s, turning down the opportunity to become a child model in favor of acting. Her first role came in the 1994 independent film Leon: The Professional, however her breakout role did not come until she was cast as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. In 2005, Portman received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her critically acclaimed performance in the art house drama Closer. She divides her roles between mainstream films such as V for Vendetta and art house films such as Garden State.

NO TIFFS FOR NATALIE

Natalie Portman seen on Sep 16 2009 in Toronto, Canada. Every once in awhile an event comes along that reminds us just how gorgeous Natalie Portman is, and she pulled off a stunning look at the screening of her latest film presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada on September 16. All I can say is Nat is working with a great stylist these days!! Her fuchsia Lanvin gown is absolutely stunning, even if it is a bit inappropriate for frigid temps (to nab the bright look, try Interlud's Stitch Hem Halter Dress in Red or Qi Cashmere's Racerback Pocket Dress in Bright Rose). I have a penchant for bright colors but there's something about the hot pink floral with the red poppy on the bust, accented by NP's crimson nails and blood red pout that I am absolutely gaga over. Especially because I didn't expect it from Natalie – let's face it, her style isn't exactly cutting edge for most occasions. She completed the look with modest Aldo pumps and a pair of colorful cluster earrings (try Calico Juno's Princess 104 in Pink Sapphire). What do you think of the 'fit? Ms. Portman was attending the screening of her newest film Love and Impossible Pursuits, which she co-produced while starring alongside Lisa Kudrow, Scott Cohen and Charlie Tahan. The LA Times Blog gave an outstanding review, noting the fact that NP signed on to the project 10 days before filming began to replace Jennifer Lopez: "Perhaps [Natalie] should take all her roles with so little preparation, as she seems to inhabit the part so completely it is difficult to imagine anyone else in it. She doesn't exhibit the plucky spirit so often asked for of younger actresses, but rather an armored wariness and defensive hostility that is remarkable to encounter. Though the film may at times be less than perfect, Portman gives a startlingly rounded and full-blooded performance." Rather refreshing to see such a positive review online! Are you interested in the flick?

BEAUTIFUL IN BALENCIAGA

Natalie Portman seen on May 09 2009 in Washington, DC. As a Harvard alum and one of the smartest minds in the biz, Natalie Portman loves her politics and was thrilled to attend the White House Correspondents dinner on May 9 in Washington, DC. I think it’s a safe guess Nat is one of the most informed celebs, and she excitedly gushed about her seating arrangements to the press: “My table is pretty good. It’s [Treasury Secretary Timothy] Geithner, [Defense Secretary Robert] Gates and [Senior Presidential Advisor] Valerie Jarrett. I’m looking forward to that.” Wonder how Natalie snagged such a politically hot table? Maybe her invitation from Newsweek had something to do with it. Taking the black tie dress code seriously, Natalie picked a gorgeous noir Balenciaga gown for the event with tantalizing low neckline. Love the intricately pleated bodice and halter neckline held on by two tiny threads (if you can’t resist a good LBD, check out Black Halo’s Hayden Halter Dress in Black/Charcoal or Tricia Fix’s Goddess Cocktail Dress in Black), but if any of you looked at the straps and thought she looks on the verge of a wardrobe malfunction, congratulations Sherlock: Nat showed a little too much while working it for the cameras. You can see a little nip in the photo on the left, and Miss P continued to let it all hang out until someone adjusted the dress for her. Oops! I still love the provocative twist on the classic black evening gown, but I wish she’d left the chiffon wrap at the hotel. It’s not like it’s providing any warmth and it looks dated, but I suppose the old fashioned frump is the essence of NP’s style. Adding a satin clutch with a silver closure (try Julie K’s glossy Sarah Clutch in Black Glaze) and classic diamond studs, NP pulled her hair back and looked especially radiant at the cocktail party. She really cleans up nice, doesn’t she? After returning to LA, Natalie was spotted filming some very interesting scenes for her newest project, Hesher on May 13. NP was filming a scene where she gets in a “physical altercation” with a bully – don’t let them hold you down Nat! What do you think of the costume, the hair and the dorky glasses?

MAKING OF NATALIE

Natalie Portman seen on Apr 21 2009 in New York, NY. Getting dressed up for a night at Tribeca Cinemas, Natalie Portman attended the kick-off Tribeca Film Festival event on April 21 in New York. When she's not onscreen, Natalie is one of those rare young celebs who is much better known for her behind the scenes work than her fashion choices. It seems like when it comes to her signature style, anything goes with Nat, so I have to wonder why she went with this frilly dotted dress (try more exciting options like Gold Hawk's Solid Ruffle Dress in Blush Charmus or add some color with the similar breezy style of Gold Hawk's Long Shoulder Garden Party Dress in Orange). The wrap dress style isn't bad, but the boring shape and ruffled collar looks frumpy with her mousy hair and absent jewelry. I do love the sharp pointy heels though - at least she added something modern to the vintage dress! To be fair, the crimson lips and matching nails give her a slightly elegant edge. What do you think of the complete look - is it appropriate for the event or totally snoozeworthy? Now that she's been getting comfortable behind the camera instead of in front of it, Natalie is expanding her directing career by helping young filmmakers gain experience by working with industry insiders from a range of departments. At the Tribeca evebt, Natalie introduced herself to twenty Film Fellows and unveiled her new website MakingOf.com to high school filmmakers in attendance. NP founded the website to give youngers a behind the scenes look at the entertainment biz, as explained by the site's mission statement: MakingOf is a behind-the-scenes Web portal, founded by Natalie Portman and Christine Aylward, that provides an intimate, fresh look into the process of creating entertainment by the insiders themselves. Our mission is to champion the art and craft of entertainment creation. We started MakingOf because we realized that so much of what goes into entertainment creation is unavailable to the people who love and consume it the most. We wanted to give fans a way to experience that creation and learn from the insiders and thus MakingOf was born. Are any of you film buffs interested in getting behind the camera one day - or at least browsing a website about it?

NAT'S MANY MEN

Natalie Portman seen on Mar 26 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. Always the casual sweetheart, Natalie Portman headed out for a casual day of furniture shopping in Los Angeles on March 26. Now that Nat has relocated from her NYC apartment to the west coast, she ventured out to do a little antique shopping for her new pad. Her ‘fit is completely mundane, but I don’t mind the navy-cranberry-slate color combo. The shiny athletic pants have got to go (try something like Ecoganik’s Shirring Mala Pant in Coconut Shell instead ), but I do like the slouchy striped cardigan (like Autumn Cashmere’s Ribbed Stripe Crew Neck in Navy Foliage) and the hammock tote (check out the similar shape of Carla Mancini’s Braided Handle Front Tab Crocodile Tote in Off White Croco). Would any of you wear something like this out furniture shopping, or do you leave the sweat pants at home? While she usually keeps to herself, rumors have been swirling about Natalie’s recent romantic involvement with a few hot Hollywood stars. Nat is rumored to have made out with married actor Sean Penn (doubtful) and is casually seeing Ryan Gosling after meeting him while he DJed at a club in Hollywood (slightly more believable). Ryan is said to be so smitten with Natalie that he’s been sending her long lovey dovey texts and trying to woo her intellectual side with exclusive first edition books. Ryan is also known for his smarts, like Harvard grad Natalie, so if she’s ready to move on after breaking up with Devendra Banhart a few months, he seems like a good pick! Do you think they would make a cute couple? Nat will also be filming a romantic comedy with Brad Pitt in the upcoming months – her luck just keeps getting better!

LAYING LOW AT BARDOT

Natalie Portman seen on Mar 12 2009 in West Hollywood, CA. Going quietly about her life as usual, Natalie Portman took a break from her super busy schedule for a night out with a gal pal at Bardot nightclub in West Hollywood on March 12. She looked a little out of it as she made her way to her car, but let’s hope it wasn’t from the booze! Nat was photographed getting behind the wheel and driving away from the bar with her girlfriend – another potential celebrity DUI avoided? Though other celebs get all dolled up for Bardot (and the Hollywood scene in general), Natalie started her night in a casual magenta boyfriend cardigan (try Signorelli’s cozy Love Tree Button Cashmere Cardigan in Ash and be sure to check out the graphic on the back!) over a plain white tank, paired with charcoal skinny jeans (like Denim of Virtue’s Patiece 5 Pocket Tapered Jean in Dark Grey) and black wedge boots. Carrying a slouchy grey tote with a braided handle (opt for Rough Roses’ Roxy Tote in Grey), I’m loving Nat’s casual vibe but let’s face it: this ‘fit is appropriate for day, not a night out! I guess Natalie has always made her own rules. The quirky actress was spotted taking her adorable pup Charlie out for a stroll earlier this week, enjoying a lunch with friends and a little down time before the much anticipated release of New York, I Love You next month. I have to say I am super excited that this flick is finally going to hit the theaters – it’s been almost a year since Nat was spotted filming/directing in NYC last May! In case you missed Paris, I Love You, add it to your NetFlix queue ASAP and revel in the eclectic collection of short films revolving simply around the theme of love in Paris. Natalie played a famous actress in one of the shorts and also stars in one in the new flick – although not as the same character. Nat also got the chance to sit in the director’s chair for her own short this time around, as did Scarlett Johansson. We’ll have to wait and see how these two ladies live up to their reputations on the other side of the camera lens!

PRINCESS PINK

Natalie Portman seen on Feb 22 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. She’s not usually one for color, but Natalie Portman showed up in a vividly pink gown on the red carpet of the 81st Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles on February 22, standing out against all the white dresses that were so popular this year. I adore the candy colored hue and intricately jeweled bodice of this gorgeous Rodarte frock, but I’m not sure if the shade is a good pick for Natalie’s characteristically plain style. It’s a little too princess, a little too feminine compared to her usual taste. It doesn’t help that the color is strikingly similar to Alicia Keys’ Armani Prive gown – sort of kills the originality of the bubblegum shade, no? For pink lovers out there, check out CoutureCandy’s fun frocks for spring, like Tricia Fix’s Noriko Long Dress in Fuchsia Flower or Betsey Johnson’s Tiered Dress in Blush. Nat also arrived decked out in diamond earrings, rings and a stunning cuff bracelet (try Jessica Elliot’s Open Clover Cuff in Sterling Silver), and carried a dark rounded clutch (switch it up and add some color to your ‘fit with Carla Mancini’s Small Clutch in Fuchsia). I have to give a nod to Nat’s makeup artist for the dramatic eyes and defined cheekbones – again, not something she usually does and it’s refreshing to see her so dressed up. It is the Oscars, afterall! The only thing I don’t understand: the black nail polish. Why are so many actresses cutting their nails short and painting them black these days? Such an anti-feminine color with such a girly dress confuses me. Am I the only one? During the ceremony, Nat took the stage to present an award with Ben Stiller, portraying Joaquin Phoenix with a furry beard and dark shades. Kudos to Nat for keeping a straight face! Before the show was over, Natalie ruffled a few feathers when she left the ceremony early to make an appearance at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party at the Sunset Tower Hotel, mingling with celebs including Daniel Craig, Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer. The early exit could mean one of two things: the Vanity Fair party is just that cool, or the Oscars were just a little boring this year. What did you think of the show?

NAT'S NEW FLING?

Natalie Portman seen on Jan 24 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. She’s a low maintenance kind of girl, and Natalie Portman looked especially low-key at the Producers Guild Awards on January 24. Held at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, Natalie walked the red carpet in a plain navy silk dress (try Shumaq’s Anna Jumper in Navy or Ella Moss’ Chantal Puffsleeve Dress in Night) with a contrasting violet belt tied around her waist (get the look with Julie K’s Brooke Skinny Belt in White). Carrying a shiny bronze fold over clutch (try Antoinette Lee’s Vita Snake Clutch in Bronze) and wearing elegant black ball earrings (similar to Michele Michel’s Onyx Disco Ball Earrings in Silver), Nat wore her tousled locks down with her bangs swept to the side. I must say I’m not really a fan of the celeb resurgence of the bed head look – a bit too unkempt for me! What do you think of Natalie’s ‘fit here? Normally Natalie isn’t the subject of Hollywood dating gossip, but rumor has it she has been casually dating Ryan Gosling for the past few weeks. The couple met at one of Ryan’s DJ gigs in Hollywood last month and have had a few hush-hush dates since. Let the flirty text messages begin! A source said Ryan is crazy about Nat, but neither newly-single party is eager to commit to another spin at the relationship game. What do you think – can you picture Natalie and Ryan as a couple?

GETTING SOME SUN... IN JANUARY

Natalie Portman seen on Jan 16 2009 in Hollywood, CA. Enjoying the recent warm weather in Los Angeles, Natalie Portman ventured out to the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood on January 16. Natalie donned one of her favorite sundresses from last summer: a red, yellow and blue striped mini with a nautical theme (try CoutureCandy’s colorful array of minis for spring like Misile’s Amsterdam Dress in Navy Stripe or Lotta Stensson’s fancier Satin Shirt Dress in Grey). Resist the urge to sneer at her for repeating such a boring look – I’m pretty sure she’s into that whole environmentally-friendly-recycle-your-wardrobe thing. And is that such a bad thing, really? Natalie is also carrying the same woven tote from the summer, but the sunny new flats and classic navy cardigan perk up her look. With a brighter tote (like Antoinette Lee’s adorable Dolce Handbag in White), this ‘fit would be adorable for spring! Natalie completed her look with gold Ray Ban’s, a long wrapped necklace (check out Rachel Leigh’s versatile Lucky Coin Necklace in Banana) and a few mini braids gathered into a bouncy ponytail. It’s very juvenile but as you can see Nat is having fun with it, even if she’s sacrificing fashion a little. Would you rock a similar ‘fit on a sunny day? Natalie has been laying pretty low over the past few weeks, but lately she’s surfaced in LA and looks much happier than usual. With several impending movie releases including New York, I Love You and Brothers, it’s good to see Natalie enjoying herself before the rush of promo appearances begins. Natalie is also taking part in yet another short funny internet flick: she and Michelle Williams are appearing in an art film that starts with the gorgeous gals fighting over a perfume bottle and ends in a cat-fight on a hotel suite floor. The film’s director Roman Polanski and Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli appear to be poking fun at high profile fragrance ads starring celebs, like Nicole Kidman for Chanel, Charlize Theron for Dior, and the slew of other celebs that star in their own overly dramatic perfume slots, including Britney Spears. What are your thoughts on celebrity fragrances – do you wear them, or do you think they’re overly hyped?

SECRET PARTY GIRL?

Natalie Portman seen on Jan 13 2009 in Hollywood, CA. She usually leads a very mysterious life, but Natalie Portman seems to have come out of her shell as of late! Nat grabbed a bite to eat with a mystery man in the wee hours of January 13, toting a doggy bag from Joan’s on Third as she made her way home solo. Wearing a classic chocolate brown blazer with vintage stone-washed jeans (try Desert Blue’s Wind Element Jean in Black Spleen) and a vibrant lilac tee (check out Qi’s Portrait Top in Mauve), Natalie added striped brown flats and a funky fish necklace (try Accessories & Beyond’s eclectic Suede Necklace in Honey Brown with Charms in Gold) to complete her ‘fit. Not that exciting, but for a late night meal it’s very polished. I also think her hair looks fabulous here – shiny and healthy with casual waves, very girl-next-door with a classy twist. What do you think of the look – too boring? Besides late night meals, Natalie has also been making some new friends in Tinseltown. She was spotted partying it up at Bardot in Hollywood the night before with wild child Katy Perry. I can’t imagine what this duo would talk about, but since Katy is busy getting over her ex Travis McCoy I have a feeling there is some boy bashing going on! Nat has had a few months to cope with her split from indie rocker Devendra Banhart, but I’m sure living with her parents after selling her NYC dwelling has her itching for a crazy night out!

ALL BUSINESS

Natalie Portman seen on Dec 18 2008 in New York, NY. Striving to finish all of her work before the upcoming Hanukkah holiday, Natalie Portman was spotted hard at work on the set of 17 Photos of Isabel, an adaptation of the novel Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. Rehearsing lines with co-stars Scott Cohen and Lisa Kudrow on set in New York on Dec 18, Nat was quite professionally dressed to fulfill her on screen obligations. Arriving on set in a long sleeve red sweater (check out Qi’s Drop Shoulder Scoop Top in Red Kiss) topped with a classic black blazer (like Signorelli’s comfy Logo Blazer in Black), booty hugging skinny jeans (like Tag’s Skinny No Flap Jean in Resin Rinse) and cropped black boots, Natalie wore her hair naturally straight with minimal jewelry to pick up her look. She looks so natural I can’t tell if she’s in costume or just taking her role seriously. What do you think? Looking to the future, it seems like 2009 will be a good year for Nat, with the impending release of New York, I Love You and a few other projects in the works. One thing that won’t be looking positive for Natalie? Té Casan, the footwear brand backing the Natalie Portman Collection of vegan heels, has gone out of business, one of the early victims of the economic crisis. Natalie was inspired to create the line because she couldn’t find appropriate footwear for events that weren’t made out of leather or other animal materials – what will she do now?

WHO'S THAT GIRL?

Natalie Portman seen on Nov 10 2008 in New York, NY. Who are you and what have you done with Natalie Portman? Where is her trademark messy hair, drab eco-friendly tote and uncoordinated footwear? I’m so confused by this new look I’m not sure what to make of it! I guess when Natalie saw the invite for Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards she took the name seriously, getting all dolled up for the event at Carnegie Hall in NYC on Nov 10. Wearing a dazzling structured dress by Jolibe (check out similar LBD’s like LaROK’s Sequined Rolly Dress in Black or Shumaq’s Sasha Keyhole Dress in Black) with pom-pom pumps from her Te Casan vegan shoe line (Matiko’s Narissa Heel in Black and Zebra Print would be fun to pair with either pick above), Natalie sparkled effortlessly with her Tiffany earrings (save a few pennies with Michele Michel’s classy Seed Earrings in Silver) and a sleek new ‘do. If she has ever looked breathtakingly gorgeous in her life, it was definitely on Monday night, and I hope she keeps it up! Besides her newfound beauty regimen, Nat has been quite the busy bee lately, moving home to the Big Apple while filming and co-producing her latest project, Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. Relocating to her home city so quickly has created quite the pickle for her though, as she recently sold her West Village condo and was forced to go with the only alternative: moving back in with the ‘rents! Natalie said, "I'm homeless at the moment so I am residing with my parents. It's rough. It was cool in the beginning because I got good meals and my laundry done but it turns into trouble." Guess even celebs are feeling the economic pinch!

POOCH PRIDE

Natalie Portman seen on Oct 28 2008 in Hollywood, CA. Staying true to her recent announcement that puppies are the solution to the current economic crisis, Natalie Portman snuggled with her pooch in Hollywood on Oct 28 on her way out of the Chateau Marmont Hotel. Going back to her Harvard prep days, Nat paired a classic cropped cardigan (switch it up with Autumn Cashmere’s Mixed Stripe V Neck Cardigan in Pumpernickel) with a sporty striped tank (Rails’ Jacqueline Tank in Bark would be adorable with the striped cardigan)and casual straight leg jeans (try James Jeans’ Tom 5 Pocket Straight Leg in Antique Gold. Natalie carried her seriously adorable Yorkie before strapping her to a leash for a sunny afternoon walk in classic red Vans sneaks (with the tank and cardigan above, I would have worn boots like Matiko’s Scallop Boot in Brown). Whether you love or hate Nat’s complete disregard for fashion critics, I must say I admire that she can go from ultra classy at Paris Fashion Week to super scrubby without seeming to care what anyone thinks. And she has a point there – is it wrong to wear sweats and sneakers on an international flight, or jeans and a cardigan while walking your dog? In addition to her world travels as of late, Nat has been one of the most vocal celebs encouraging youngsters to vote on Nov 4. Now that the day is almost here, what’s next on her agenda? Getting back to work, Nat is set to star in the onscreen adaptation of Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. Filming is set to begin in New York in ten days, and after J-Lo pulled out of the project at the last minute Nat was asked to step in and save the day. I can’t imagine what type of character both J-Lo and Natalie could play, and that thought alone has my curiosity piqued. Have any of you read the book?

PUPPIES AND PICASSO

Natalie Portman seen on Oct 20 2008 in Paris, France. Even traveling doesn’t excuse this poorly matched ‘fit, but I must say I admire Natalie Portman’s courage to spend a day in Paris checking out the Picasso exhibit at the Grand Palais Museum on Oct 20 in this interesting ensemble. Nat started with the casual striped summer dress she wore to the US Open back in September (a more mature style like Smitten’s High Neck Patch Pocket Tunic in Black would have been in better taste) with black tights and a comfy navy peacoat (Suzabelle’s Umbria Trench Coat in Slate and Grey would have added a classy element perfect for Paris) topped off with a thick black scarf (like Raw 7’s Snowflake Hooded Scarf in Black). From there, the denim fringed moccasins should never have been worn out of the house, the army print shoulder bag should have been a solid color (Rough Roses’ Roxy Tote in Grey would have matched better) and the crooked drugstore silver rimmed sunnies need to be adjusted or simply tossed in the trash. Topped off with the clashing red nail polish, all I can fathom is that for better or worse, Natalie always makes a statement. From her “I don’t care what you think” über casual style to voicing her political opinions on the eve of the election, Nat has been especially active over the past few months, encouraging voters to register through the “Declare Yourself” campaign and recording a video for VoteForChange encouraging Ohio citizens to take advantage of early voting. To add a finishing touch to her vocal efforts, Natalie recorded a Funny or Die short with Rashida Jones trying to coax a smile out of us all and suggest a solution to the financial crisis at the same time –puppies! In the video, the pair read a short dialogue, "The global financial crisis is affecting all of us. The panic on Wall Street has now reached mainstream. There doesn't seem to be a clear answer. And the worst may be yet to come." Natalie adds the final words, "After careful consideration, Rashida and I have determined the best course of action - puppies!" The rest of the film shows the girls gleefully playing with a litter of adorable puppies. So cute it almost makes me want to rush out and get one… and then I realize that with the economy the way it is, who can afford to feed themselves right now, let alone a puppy? Even Natalie is feeling the economic pinch, dropping the selling price for her West Village condo $200k to get it off the market. Lucky for her, she still profited almost $800k from the sale – maybe enough to start a “food stamps for puppies” program to encourage adoption?

AU REVOIR, DEVENDRA!

Natalie Portman seen on Oct 02 2008 in Paris, France. Looking très magnifique, Natalie Portman is getting over her recent break-up the only way a girl can: indulging in a little retail therapy, of course! Natalie was spotted in Paris on October 2 attending Giambattisa Valli’s runway show, looking every bit the polished, glamorous actress she is. Perhaps Paris’ elegant mademoiselles told her to toss those hideous sweats? For the show, Nat wore a classic LBD with tasteful tulip shoulders (check out Suzabelle’s Galliano Swing Dress in Black or Ella Moss’ James Flare Sleeve Dress in Black), breaking out her fav pom-pom heels and carrying a black satin bag (try Moe Bags’ Andie Rouched Silk CLICK Bag in Black), completing her look with classic red polish on her digits. Nothing like a trip to Paris – during fashion week, nonetheless – to mend a broken heart! Natalie met her ex-beau on the set of his music video, “Carmensita,” in which she starred, but it looks like her role isn’t quite finished yet. Nat has been asked to apologize for her portrayal of Princess Carmensita after offending a variety of Hindu scholars, who spoke out collectively against the video, “The images used in the video are revered in Hinduism and are not to be thrown around loosely for dramatic effects. We invite Hollywood to immerse itself in Hinduism, but we ask that actors and actresses, directors and producers take our religion seriously and respectfully.” I doubt that Natalie actually had any say in the way her character was portrayed, but the spokesman continued, “Forgiveness is one of the main virtues of Hindu ethics. If Natalie Portman offers a sincere public apology, Hindus would not only absolve her but might also pray for her success in future ventures.” Looks like Nat needs to make some phone calls!

AS CASUAL AS THEY COME

Natalie Portman seen on Sep 25 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. It may be acceptable to dress comfortably for trans-continental flights, but Natalie Portman took it to a whole new level when she arrived at LAX on Sept 25 with her pooch and luggage in tow. From the outside, her black overcoat (similar to Suzabelle’s Biella Wool Trench Coat in Black) and dark silver rimmed sunnies look sleek and polished, but the tucked in purple tee and baggy sweats underneath – yikes! (To pull off the casual look and retain an ounce of style, try Hank Vintage Threads’ Fleur de Lis French Terry Pant in Mocha with Woo’s Long Sleeve Henley in Light Plum - no tucking in allowed!). I wouldn’t even wear this get-up to the gym, but I guess we all have to give NP a break. People announced this week that Nat and her wacky beau, Devendra Banhart, have called it quits, with friends saying things heated up too quickly and fizzled just as fast. My guess? Nat is headed home to her native NY to recuperate from the split. She won’t have much time to relax though, as the next item on her agenda is directing her first full length film, an adaptation of Israeli Amos Oz’s gripping memoir A Tale of Love and Darkness, which will be narrated in its original language, Hebrew, rather than using the English translation. NP explains her inspiration to Variety, “Someone made a good point once about how would you feel if Mexicans came and made a movie about George Washington in Spanish? It would be absurd but we do it all the time. I think people are much more open to reading subtitles now and prefer the authenticity of seeing the true language of that culture. It's becoming unacceptable to make films in places and in a language they're not supposed to be in.” Seems like more Harvard alums should be directing films, no? Not to mention, directing the film entirely in Hebrew will give Israeli-born Nat a chance to get in touch with her roots… just in time for Rosh Hashanah!

TENNIS TIME

Natalie Portman seen on Sep 08 2008 in New York. NY. After her big week in Venice, Natalie Portman made her way home to New York on Sept 8, but surprisingly not for fashion week. Sticking to her tomboy roots, Nat headed straight for the US Open, where she sat directly in front of Charlize Theron while enjoying a few brews and watching Roger Federer defeat Andy Murray. For her tennis outing, Nat wore a comfy, casual striped t-shirt dress (like Gina Michele’s Organic Citrus Stripe Dress in Sunshine Yellow) with simple strappy sandals (try Matiko’s Ivana Sandals in Gold) and carried an earthy brown tote (similar to Carla Mancini’s Braided Handle Bag in Metallic Crocodile). Nat kept her accessories minimal, with chic diamond stud earrings (try the natural shape of Vevina Juji’s Sweet Earrings in Silver instead, I’m sure Nat would approve!) and classy red polish on her digits. In response to her well received directorial debut at the Venice International Film Festival, Nat told the press, “I was always interested in trying to write and direct. We have so much time off between filming as actors that we tend to get restless and we want a creative outlet. There is not always acting work that fulfills that need.” Though her debut film was under 30 mins, I can’t wait to see how a full feature film would turn out with Nat behind the camera!

QUITE THE HUMANITARIAN

Natalie Portman seen on Sep 01 2008 in Venice, Italy. One of the most intelligent actresses in the business (she did graduate from Harvard, afterall), natural beauty Natalie Portman made waves at the 65th Annual Venice International Film Festival taking place this weekend. Arriving by boat, Natalie attended the screening of her first short film, Eve, on September 1 in a non-competition slot of the festival. Nat’s debut flick stars former model Lauren Bacall and Ben Gazzara in a short story about a woman and her grandmother. I can’t wait to see what the critics think of Nat’s directing ability! Although she later glammed up the red carpet in a gorgeous fringed frock, Natalie arrived at the screening for her film looking every bit the natural, indie girl she is, fresh faced with her brown wavy locks flowing. Wearing a simple graphic tee (try Hank Vintage Threads’ Girly Silhouette V Neck Thermal in White) with tight rolled cuff jeans (similar to Desert Blue’s Water Element Jean in Tornado Dark Indigo, easy to cuff yourself) and funky, moccasin-meets-Vans earthy shoes, Nat carried a black envelope clutch (like Julie K’s Jessica Fold Over Clutch in Night Exotic) and shielded her peepers from the bright Venice sun with black Wayfarers (for a fun alternative on the classics, check out JeeVice’s Sassy in Black/G15). Last night, Natalie was honored to be the first recipient of the “Movie for Humanity Award,” a new genre created to honor dedicated humanitarians in the movie industry. Natalie accepted the award and a $50,000 check that will be donated to the charity of her choice – the Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania, a non-profit with wide-ranging education and conservation programs. Natalie has worked with the organization to develop the TACARE Girls’ Scholarship Program, which allows women access to secondary and higher education, enabling recipients to pursue job opportunities not traditionally sought after by women in their impoverished homeland. Congrats, Nat!

PREPPY IN PLAID

Natalie Portman seen on Aug 10 2008 in Malibu, CA. Our fave indie girl, Natalie Portman spent her Sunday out shopping with a friend in Malibu on August 10. NatNat browsed the racks in a preppy plaid jumper (like Plenty by Tracy Reese’s Half Circle Slip in Cayenne Plaid) paired with simple flipflops (try Matiko’s Juju Sandal in Black to pair with the above frock), a natural toned tote (check out Rough Roses’ Whitney Tote in Grey), and edgy metal rimmed sunnies (JeeVice’s Sexy in Brown Fade have a similar funky shape). Though she’s shielding her face, NP can’t shield her happiness that her first short film, Eve will debut at the Venice Film Festival on Sept 1. NatNat has also had her eye on the upcoming remake of the 1977 horror flick Suspiria, in which she would star as a ballet dancer who ends up attending the dance school from hell. Rumor has it the Garden State star is also interested in producing the remake of the cult classic, set to be directed by Pineapple Express mastermind David Gordon Green. I guess whether or not she produces will depend on how well her flick does in Venice. What do you think, can you picture Natalie as a bloody ballerina?

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Natalie Portman seen on Jul 15 2008 in New York, NY. Natalie Portman was out for a sweaty stroll in the NYC heat on July 15, looking as casual as the girl next door. To nab Nat’s comfy, everyday look, start with cropped denim shorts (very similar to Pierce Jean’s Costa Rica Frayed Bermuda in Light), a simple tee with a catchy graphic (check out Hussy Jr’s Love Your Hate Tee in Ivory) and add some earthy jewelry (Castaway’s Mauritius Necklace is ocean inspired like Nat’s Hawaiian shells). For the finishing touch: strappy black sandals (like Matiko’s 4 Ivy Sandal in Black), sleek shades with metal frame accents (try JeeVice’s Edgy in Black/Ash Brown) and an eco-friendly canvas tote. The 26-year-old actress appears to have taken a break from the silver screen and is now dabbling in other industries, beginning with fashion. The trendy vegetarian created her own line of vegan shoes for Te Casan back in February, which are leather-free and contribute 5% of proceeds to charity. The Harvard alum described her inspiration in typical smart-girl fashion, “Basically, I did it out of a lack of choice. I wanted a Mary Jane shoe without leather. I’ve been getting stuff from Target, which is de facto vegan because it’s so cheap. But I did need some shoes that weren’t made of canvas or plastic.” Continuing the eco-friendly theme, Nat will appear this season as a guest judge on a Project Runway challenge that involves sustainable materials. Natalie’s next move: appearing in her wacky boyfriend Devendra Banhart’s Bollywood inspired music video, “Carmensita.” You MUST google this video immediately – it’s too funny to pass up. In the video (which was filmed a few months ago, right after the couple met), Natalie plays Princess Carmensita, who must be rescued by her prince and his “rebellious beard.” The opening shots are weirdly reminiscent of Natalie’s portrayal of Queen Amadala in Star Wars, but the cheesy acting and subtitles are hilarious. Though no one can quite figure out the attraction between the beauty and her very hairy beast, Natalie and Devendra have been snapped smooching all over NYC, Malibu and Cannes since they got together. A close friend said, "He's funny, scary-smart and in love with her. This is a serious one, and they seem to be in it for the long haul. I've never seen her so in love or connected to somebody. I definitely wouldn't be shocked if he popped the question soon." Hmmm, do you think their love will last?

NATALIE THE HUMANITARIAN

Natalie Portman seen on Jun 05 2008 in New York, NY. Natalie Portman was seen strolling through NYC on June 5, arm in arm with her boyfriend, folk rock singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart. To get Natalie's look, start with a top in a shade of green that any leprechaun would be proud of, like Zoa's Pleated Ruffle Sleeve Top in Peppermint, or Lotta Stensson's beautifully decorated Pocket Tunic in Forest. Next up, slip your gams into a pair of black cropped denim (like James Jeans' Alex Skinny Crop Zip Jeans) and put on a pair of black ballet flats. Finally, grab a roomy brown leather tote (similar to Dutchy's Mesa Bag in Brandy) and slip on a pair of gradient shades, and you're set. Harvard degree sold separately! Not content with being named Maxim Magazine's "Sexiest Vegetarian," Natalie has a new humanitarian project to keep her busy. She is currently filming a clip to support a youth village which is being planned in Rwanda. This village will be a safe place for approximately 500 children-turned-refugees from the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Portman plans on screening the film on "Oprah" to publicize the effort. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I love when celebrities use their fame for good instead of DUI's!

Natalie Portman seen on Feb 18 2008 in London. Natalie Portman was spotted leaving Benares Restaurant in Berkeley Square in London on February 18, getting her spicy and exotic food fix, as Benares is a well known restaurant in London for its Indian cuisine. Natalie is totally mixing and matching high-end couture with casual kicks in this look, pairing a lust-worthy quilted Chanel with a pair of beat-up looking Converse. Classic! Portman also wrapped herself up in a grey scarf, and finished off her look with a pair of rich blue denim (like Joe's Jeans' Cigarette Super Slim Jean in Kennedy), a striped top (check out Signorelli's Butterfly Tee in Pearl) and kept warm with a cozy black coat (similar to Johnson's Jimmy Jacket with Tie Belt in Black). While Natalie is currently on a whirlwind tour promoting her new film, The Other Boleyn Girl, she has made it perfectly clear that there was one condition for her to do the picture: Scarlett Johansson. Nat said recently, "I read the script and loved it and came on as Anne, and I was like, 'I will only do it if Scarlett does it,' because I have just loved her for so long, since we were kids. She's so true always and so good, and you just never get the chance to work with someone your own age that you so admire. This was such a great, great chance (to do that)." Talk about the mutual admiration society!
