GOING BACK TO BASICS

Though she’s worked hard to change her image as of late, it seems Christina Aguilera got some inspiration from her jazz inspired vintage stage as she worked the red carpet at the 2008 American Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Nov 23. Wearing a gorgeous grey lace dress with floral appliqués and a voluminous skirt (to get the vintage look, try Walter’s Lace Trim Sweet Dress in Black and Nude or Ingwa Melero’s Carmelia Dress in Taupe), Mamaguilera definitely channeled her old image with her ringlets and crimson lips. I love that she finally left the falsies at home for once and let her peepers sparkle naturally, even forgoing the winged black eyeliner – quite an improvement! Throwing in a smattering of jewelry, from a chunky white bangle (I’d keep the vintage vibe going with Rachel Leigh’s adorable Audrey Gold Bangle in Gold instead), gemstone rings (try Rachel Leigh’s Gumball Ring in Caramel) and cascading bubble earrings (such as Michele Michel’s Triple Diamond Earrings in Smoky Quartz), Christina left a hint of her new image with her black nail polish but otherwise kept it clean. The dress is probably not the most flattering thing on her curvaceous body, but I love the style so much the look works for me – do you agree? In complete contrast to her look for the awards show, Mamaguilera recently depicted her recent style inspiration to the press: “I was very inspired by the look and feel of that [pop-art] genre, your Jane Birkins, your Blondies, females who have come before who have done this so many times and so well — almost as an homage to them. Also, speaking of [Andy] Warhol, Nico from the Velvet Underground… so it all kind of ties in to a pop-art feel and twist, with a mod look. But a futuristic taste of what’s to come.” Hmm… try to wrap your mind around all those pop culture icons! Do you think Christina achieved her goal with her newly shorn bangs and bright blonde locks, or is she injecting too much sex appeal into the mix?
