“To create jewelry that evoke thoughts of treasures lost at sea”….Castaway designer, Susan Wong describes herself as a visionary self-taught artist in search of hidden treasures in distinctive objects found in nature.
Always having an appreciation for ethnic handcrafts, vintage and tribal inspired jewelry she wanted to create a line that reflected these unusual yet intriguing elements together. Launched in the Spring of 2006, Castaway is inspired by the exotic islands, nature and hand-made artworks usually seen in village flea markets along the coast of the Caribbeans and Mexico. Old world artisans who created great works with their bare hands and minimal tools is the signature of true craftsmanship and creativity. Each piece in the Castaway collection is hand-made in the designer’s studio in Brooklyn, NY. A small limited quantity is produced in each design to maintain a sense of originality and exclusivity.
Unique finds such as African sea glass beads from Ghana, hand-dyed silk fabrics and random seashells from the Caribbean islands are used to create beautiful earth loving jewels. Semi precious stones and metals are also used in the collection for more intricate and delicate pieces.The idea behind Castaway is to find the beauty and mystery beyond the unpolished exterior by combining beautiful vibrant stones then allowing them to radiate in a mixture of dusty vintage jewels and metals. Each piece in the Castaway collection is completely original and hand crafted with one of a kind visionary designs.
